telc certificates

telc is short for The European Language Certificates. The European Language Certificates belong to an internationally recognised system of European language examinations. They are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which applies to all European languages and is also used beyond Europe. telc certificates are currently available in ten languages and at all CEFR competence levels.

The German as a foreign language department of the SDI conducts all telc examinations under licence from telc gGmbH. You can prepare for the telc exams as part of our regular German courses or register to take the exam as an external candidate at our examination centre.

German for university / access to higher education

New recognised certificate: telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule exam for all German universities!

Foreign students must prove they have sufficient language skills at German universities. The telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule exam is recognised by resolutions of the German Rectors' Conference and the Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.

telc Deutsch B1

If you already have basic German skills, telc Deutsch B1 is the right exam for you.

The telc Deutsch B1 is recognised as proof of sufficient language competence for a German citizenship application.

What can you do at B1 level?

At level B1, you can communicate in a simple and connected way in everyday situations, while travelling and when talking about topics that are of personal interest. You can describe experiences, hopes and ambitions and give reasons for opinions. On the whole, you can use the most important grammatical structures correctly.

What is the structure of the exam?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. Before the oral exam you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam can take place on the day of the written exam or on another day.

telc Deutsch B2

telc Deutsch B2 tests your general German language competence at an advanced level.

What can you do at B2 level?

At level B2, you can express yourself clearly and explicitly and also successfully discuss and negotiate. You have command of the extensive vocabulary needed for your field of specialisation and for most general topics. Your usage of grammar is sound.

What is the structure of the exam?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. Before the oral exam you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam can take place on the day of the written exam or on another day.

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule

The telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule exam tests the German skills needed for success at an advanced academic level. The exam is suitable for adults who are interested in studying at German institutes of higher education, for adults who have already begun their studies at an institute of this kind or for adults who are working in an academic field and have the desire or necessity to demonstrate their German skills.

The German Rectors' Conference and the Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs recognise the telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule certificate as proof of the linguistic ability of foreign applicants to study in Germany. According to the “Framework Regulations on German Language Examinations for Studies at German Universities”, “upon successful completion of the exam, holders of a telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule certificate” are exempt from further proof of their linguistic ability to study. That means that the telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule certificate can be used instead of a TestDaF or a DSH certificate.
