Overview

Deutschlandstipendium of the Federal Government

The Deutschlandstipendium of the Federal Government is a scholarship that is special among the funding programmes in Germany. It supports students of all nationalities studying at a German university. Funding is available from the first semester onwards to high-achieving and committed students and freshers.

In addition to academic achievement, the criteria for selecting scholarship recipients include social commitment and personal achievements, such as a student overcoming challenges or obstacles in their social or family background.

Modelled after the principle of public-private partnership, businesses, foundations or private individuals participate in sponsoring young talent. The SDI München regularly asks potential sponsors for their participation. Currently, the International University SDI München is entitled to award six Deutschlandstipendien. The Federal Government and the sponsors share the funding of €300 per month.

Funding of €300 per month is normally granted for at least two semesters but may be provided for a maximum time which covers the standard period of study. The scholarship is awarded without consideration of personal or parent income. The scholarship funds also do not count towards grants awarded under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG).

Procedure

How the Deutschlandstipendium works

  • The Deutschlandstipendium provides financial support to talented and high-achieving students studying at state-recognised and state universities in Germany.
  • In addition to academic achievement, the criteria for selecting scholarship recipients include social commitment and personal achievements as well as the students’ social or family background.
  • Scholarship recipients are sponsored with €300 per month. Businesses, foundations or private individuals sponsor young talent with a pledge of €150 per month. The Federal Government matches this amount with another €150.
  • The Deutschlandstipendium is awarded without consideration of personal or parent income. The scholarship funds do not count towards grants awarded under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG).
  • Students and freshers of all nationalities can apply directly to their universities.
  • The universities organise the selection process, choose the scholarship recipients and approach potential sponsors with financial support from the Federal Government.
  • The Deutschlandstipendium is awarded for at least two semesters. For the next academic year, the university checks again whether all the criteria for sponsoring a student have been met and whether private funds are still available.
