Frequently asked questions & answers

All non-native speakers of German with an intermediate school-leaving certificate and very basic German skills. Beginners' courses (A1) need a minimum of 10 participants to take place.

You can find all the information you need under Registration. Registration forms are also available at the Central Office of the SDI.

The courses offered cover the levels A1 – C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The German skills you have acquired so far and can prove by means of certificates determine your course level. Optionally, you can also take a placement test with us after registering for a course.

Our courses start in January, March, June, July, August, September and November. A course consists of 20 - 24 lessons per week and lasts 4 or 8 weeks. Most courses take place in the mornings. You can find the exact start of the course in our annual calendar.

In order to advance to the next higher course level, it is sufficient to prove that you attended the lessons and passed the course (with the lowest passing grade or better).

You take several tests in each course. If passed, successful completion of the course is confirmed by a certificate of attendance or a transcript (on request). (levels A1 – B2+)
The SDI offers TestDaF and telc exams four to six times a year.

The TestDaF and telc B1, B2 and C1 exams can be taken without a preparatory course, but we strongly recommend attending a preparatory course.

The current information on fees can be found on the page of the respective course.

The course fee is due upon enrolment.

DSH, TestDaF and telc C1 are recognised as language certificates by all German higher education institutions.

The minimum requirement for admission to the Vocational College and the Professional College is the successful completion of TestDaF (minimum level 4-5) or DSH. The head of the language department decides on the final admission.

As a beginner you will need at least 1 year. Levels A1 and A2 take 8 weeks each, while levels B1 and B2 take 16 weeks each.
