The Arctic region has been of interest since at least the 16th century because it offers the shortest routes between Europe and the Far East. The Arctic ice shelf has until now, however, prevented the establishment of shipping routes.
The climate change, that is global warming, that has occurred during the last twenty years has caused the ice shelf to melt far more each summer. For the first time in recorded history ice-free shipping lanes can be established – temporarily – in both easterly and westerly directions.
The Northwest Passage has at last become a reality. The Arctic region has become altogether far more accessible in recent years, thus allowing the exploration and exploitation of vast oilfields and mineral deposits to become viable.
The ecology has also been affected by the climate change. The habitat is changing and
causing repercussions for both the flora and fauna. On the other hand, the changing climate brings about the the possibility of increased agricultural usage.
Politically the five neigbouring states—the USA, Canada, Denmark(Greenland), Norway and Russia—are positioning themselves to exploit the new situation. Many territorial claims still remain unresolved, though.
